This event seeks to ensure that the core ideas and messages, preventing poverty, preventing dangerous climate change, preventing species loss and reclaiming the economy are all included in our understanding and practice of greening the economy and greening economics.

The field of green economics is about reclaiming, reforming and the renaissance of Economics for all people, especially women, nature, other species, the planet and its systems and about environmental and social justice together. It is about making the economy flourish and that growth is growth in nature not destruction as currently measured. Its the economics of doing and is intensely practical and is a mesh of earth and social science and its methodology and scope are completely unique- high tech positive progressive and forward looking with a completely new analysis of what can be done and how to do it.

  Introduction

This side event will address the core Rio+20 theme of how to accelerate the green economy globally.

Hosted by The Green Economics Institute, the event will examine the critical importance of developing and deploying carbon negative technologies, reducing the net amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Green Economics as a pathway for green jobs and survivability underlies the ideas of this presentation and discussion session.

This event will examine the importance and potential of green economics and carbon negative technologies and other approaches to runaway climate change.

Detailed programme

Negative carbon technologies capture more carbon than they emit. One example is provided by Global Thermostat (GT), a new company which Professors Chichilnisky and her Columbia University colleague Dr. Peter Eisenberger (noted physicist, ex-Bell Labs researcher, and founding Director of the Columbia Earth Institute) co-founded in 2006. GT created carbon negative technology to capture carbon from the air, transforming a fossil power plant into a net carbon sink: for example, a plant that emits 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually becomes a 1 million ton sink using GT carbon capture technology. The GT process uses residual heat in a power plant, called process heat, to cogenerate CO2 capture with electricity. In this way, the more electricity one produces, the more carbon one reduces. GT is not just for fossil fuel plants? It works with any source of heat to capture carbon from air, and can accelerate the transition to renewable power plants. With GT cogeneration, renewable power plants such as concentrated solar plants (CSP) become more profitable as larger carbon sinks. The captured CO2need not be buried; it can be fed to algae to produce gasoline and clean water.

According to the International Energy Agency, over 41 percent of all human based emissions of CO2 are generated by power plants and 89 percent of electricity production around the world is powered by fossil fuels. This represents an energy infrastructure valued in excess of $55 trillion dollars. As this cannot easily be replaced, CO2 emissions will be around for some time to come. However, with CO2 air capture, much of this emitted CO2 can be recovered and molecularly tied up, thereby lowering the CO2 loading in the atmosphere. With GT's technology, the more electricity one produces, the more CO2 one can reduce from the atmosphere. This reverses the paradigm that links fossil fuel based power production with carbon emissions. A GT plant utilizing process heat in its process can capture up to twice the CO2 that a coal power plant emits, leading to carbon negative electrical power production.

In all these ways, carbon negative technologies like Global Thermostats can dramatically accelerate the development of the green economy globally, while also ensuring sustainable energy access for all.
